CDA Convention Weekend in DC!!!
CDA Convention today. I took the liberty to take a day off of work to go to the CDA Convention here in DC. It was pretty fun. It was actually the second day because there were a few events yesterday, but seeing as I how I had work and stuff to do, I really couldn't go. Doesn't sound like I missed too much, though...a few small events. Anway, it was really fun 'cause I got to see Sen. Hillary Clinton speak. I wanted to take a picture with her afterward or something, but I was crowded out by...oh, I don't know...half the room trying to get to her? Anyway, I figured that while I was here I'd have more time to do that sort of stuff anyway, so I gave up. The next big speaker was Howard Dean. This would be the second time I saw him in person. If I had been down three more seats toward the middle, I probably could have shaken his hand while he was passing by. Oh well...speech was pretty good anyway. After that, it was a training session for all of the College Dems there (yours truly included). It was okay...a bit long and they didn't give us a bathroom break. John Kerry was supposed to speak that evening, but couldn't make it. Instead, we got to watch a pre-recorded video of him and got to hear from another speaker. It was okay. In all, an interesting and tiring day. Current Mood: excited | | Thursday, July 21st, 2005 | | 8:16 pm |
I Meet Someone Famous Today!
This morning, I had a constituent breakfast with Senator Dianne Feinstein. It was pretty good. The food was okay...pretty much just bagels and donuts. And they had coffee...always a plus. Anyway, I got to take my picture with her after she talked about what she did and introduced her entire staff. It was tons of fun. I kinda wish I was working on the hill now... In other news, today was another crazy morning of trying to get to the capitol early in the morning. I'd say that it was quite the interesting and eventful morning. I AM HARDCORE!
Wow...today was crazy. This morning, I was up extra early to wait in line so that one of the staffers could get into a hearing. It was crazy...there were people already there and it was 6:50am (ET) when I got there. I was practically dead the rest of the day after that. However, I did get to see our old UCI chancellor at one of the hearings where he was a witness. Said "hi" to him, naturally. Then I was dead for the rest of the day, even after guzzling down a big cup of caffinated soda. Tomorrow, I get to get up early to do crazy stuff again. Also tomorrow morning, I'm having a constituent breakfast with Sen. Feinstein. Quite excited....can't wait. Current Mood: exhausted | | Thursday, July 14th, 2005 | | 8:40 pm |
Meet the Chancellor
Today was quite the interesting day. I got to meet our school's new chancellor. It was really fun to be able to talk to him in such a small group. It was really laid back and fun to hear what everyone had to say. I (naturally) put in my good words for all of the things I do on campus (that means you band and YDUCI). He was really pleasant to talk to...came off as very pragamatic. Took the obligatory group shot with him and I got to hold the stuffed anteater. Other than that, pretty ordinary day at work...running off and going to hearings and meetings and such. Current Mood: happy | | Monday, July 11th, 2005 | | 10:14 pm |
My Weekend in NY
You know what? I almost forgot to talk about my weekend trip to NY. I've been meaning to write something on it since I got back, but I've been quite exhausted. Anyhow... Overall, I'd say that my little weekend escapade in NY was alright. We went around and did a lot of the touristy things...Empire State building, Ground Zero, saw the Statue of Liberty, etc. Interesting segue on that...when me and my roommates went to visit Ground Zero, it began to rain. Coincidence or not? Back to the story at hand, sightseeing was okay, although I wasn't able to get too much stuff for people back home. We also went around Times Square and saw a broadway show. It was pretty good...exceeding my expectations. I also learned that I really think on an entirely different wavelength than my roommates, especially on matters on broadway show tastes, planning, and being in bad parts of town at night. In contrast to that, the bus ride to and from were pretty stressful and the hotel I was staying in was crap...and I'm being quite nice here. My roommates booked the Carter hotel because it was cheap. However, like I said, the place was crap...it was really dirty and the place was practically falling apart. If you want me to elaborate on how dirty it was, we found a nice big blood stain on one of the matresses. Needless to say, it was a nightmare for me and I was not amused at all. I'd post pictures, but they'd probably scar you for life, as they did for me. As for the bus rides, on the way there, we got to the bus quite late as a result of mass last minute packing, but fortunately, we were able to get them to wait on us. Now, you'd think that my roommates would have learned a lesson from this, but apparently they did not 'cause we ended up getting to the bus stop to go home late despite my numerous protests/warnings/whatever. We ended up missing the bus we were supposed to take, so we were forced to pay up even more money to get back. Overall, the trip was quite disorganized and very poorly planned out. Oh yeah...it also ended up being really expensive. Moral of the story: if you're gonna plan to take a trip somewhere, make sure you have a good plan to begin with. Oh...and I hate crappy, dirty hotels. Current Mood: dirty | | Friday, July 8th, 2005 | | 3:42 pm |
Current Events Catching Up
Slow week this week. Congress was in recess, so I ended bumming around catching up on various projects. It's kinda funny being here on the East coast. I've heard some people back home talk about the London bombings, but here, it's really a different experience. Things get much crazier here because of things like that. It's definitely a different animal out here with heavier security measures all over the place where we are staying. It's something that has given me a very different and new perspective on stuff like that. I'm gonna be leaving for a weekend in NY pretty soon. Fourth of July in DC (aka Fourth of July Weekend...Part the Second)
More on today: So me and my roommates went over to the Mall to camp out for the fireworks tonight. When we got there, we were able to catch the last of the parade. Seeing all of the marching bands took me way back...making me feel all old and stuff...and they had a huge inflatable Woody Wood Pecker. We spent most of the day camping out there, so while everyone else was playing cards, I decided to go on over to the folklife festival that was taking place across the street (it was the last day). While I was over there, I managed to score some free swag, so it was fun...oh, and I suppose I did manage to learn stuff along the way. Got back and watched the Navy band perform. It was a pretty good performance and after that some country singer came on. Sat through it (I really don't care much for country, but I'm pretty sure you figured that out by now) until the fireworks. By the time that started, the Mall was really packed...all the way from the Capitol to the Lincoln Memorial. Crazy stuff, as always. Anyway, hope everyone had a great Fourth of July. Fourth of July Weekend...Part the First
Quite the interesting/busy weekend. Friday, I got off a bit early due to the fact that 1) it was a Friday 2) Fourth of July weekend (w00t! ). Anyhow, I took full advantage of my break to explore the National Geographic building down the street. They had a few interesting displays, namely stuff on King Tut, Darfur, and decomposing animals (yeah...I know...). We also decided to go over to the Lincoln Memorial at night and got rained in. As cool as it was to see the lightning and to hear the thunder over there, I really hate being rained in. Saturday, slept in and then journeyed off to see Arlington cemetary. It was pretty interesting and I still feel very awkward having to smile in pictures taken at such sacred place of tremendous respect. Saw the Kennedys' graves, Arlington House (aka Lee's Mansion), and the tomb of the unknown soldier. While we were at that particular area, we witnessed the changing of the guard. It was really cool to watch and the guard had to shush the crowd a couple of times. Now a little tangent: So after the changing of the guard, a few of my friends tried to do the march. Me being me, I had to (naturally) point out that they were doing it wrong and proceded to show them the "proper" way to march (once again, yeah...I know...). At that moment, I realized how long ago hs marching band was and I felt really ancient. Moving on...we then went to eat at this really good (but expensive) prime rib place. Today, I woke up to find all of my roommates gone. Apparently, they stayed up all night playing poker and they wanted to watch the sun rise at the monuments (unfortunately, the sky was cloudy). Went to see Batman Begins as well. Really awesome movie...and it was not terribly expensive to watch. Now, I can't wait to see what's in store for me tomorrow...stay tuned. Part Deux
Oh yeah...today was also a big day at the capitol for me. Attended a couple of meetings then swung by Boxer and Feinstein's office in the Senate buildings. Speaking of which, those buildings are really nice and classy. Makes me wish I were working there... | | 3:37 pm |
Today's lesson from DC: DC summer weather and suits with coats aren't a great mix at all. Yuck... Current Mood: dirty | | Sunday, June 26th, 2005 | | 6:55 pm |
Quite the busy crazy weekend...
Saturday: Went to the Carribean festival going on. Walked from our place to there for a lot of blocks. Almost died in the heat (and humidity) waiting in line to get food for almost an hour (I didn't have breakfast that morning). Came back and just bummed around and rested. Today: Went around DC looking for a clothing store. Found it and my roomates got some stuff. Then we went over to the Air and Space Museum. Only spent about an hour or so 'cause we got there a bit late. Next we went to this huge BBQ thing downtown. We stayed there for only about an hour, but I managed to eat some good ribs and a pork sandwich and scored myself free frozen lemonade as well (saved myself a few dollars...we got there so late that when I asked where I could get drink tickets, the person working the booth just handed it to me). Good times. Current Mood: happy | | Tuesday, June 21st, 2005 | | 7:50 pm |
Today, my DC adventures officially begin!
It's only the end of day 1 on the job and I've already managed to score some free swag! Sweet deal... That said, it was a very busy day and it was tons of fun. Current Mood: happy | | Sunday, June 19th, 2005 | | 3:33 pm |

Everything that can go wrong....
Here's a short summary of the big highlights of my day: -Left for classes later than I wanted because my computer suffered some sort of memory fart. Twice. -Fell of my bike on my way to class 'cause the wheel couldn't get over a hose. -After getting to eat breakfast, one of my backpack straps got caught in the locker door below mine. After many minutes of struggling to get it out, I finally managed to pry the thing out using my keys. Then the person using the locker below me came back... -Econ midterm. 'Nuff said. -Got back to my room and couldn't nap due to coffee (kept me more awake through classes, though). -Ate at Mesa Commons for Mardi Gras themed dinner. Less people than I hoped would come came. So yeah...a walking testament to Murphy's law. On the upshot, I was apparently more prepared for my midterm than I thought I was... An Update?
Wow...it's really been a while since I've updated this thing. Let's just say that tons of stuff have happened and that I'll be sure to update more... Current Mood: busy | | Friday, January 28th, 2005 | | 3:10 am |
Aww man...it's been a while since I've updated this thing. Holy crap. Yeah...I've been busy for the past few weeks and I'm gonna get around to posting up a whole bunch of stuff on the weekend. Seriosly. It's catch up time for me... | | Friday, January 14th, 2005 | | 11:25 am |
Stuff
Alright...now to get to this thing I've been meaning to do for a while... So it's been a couple of weeks since break ended. Started classes on Wednesday last week, which was kinda weird. Here are the highlights: -History 126: Felt kinda weird being surrounded by upperclassmen. Then Steve comes in...Anyway, it's an okay class so far. Also, my teacher formally declared the History Channel as the "Hitler Channel". Awesome. -Econ 100: Teacher was a no-show to the first class. Found out we had to pay to do our homework for the class. -Econ 10: So apparently, I no longer have the same godawful teacher from last quarter. The replacement is looking to be much better. -Hang out with the usual gang. So yeah...now this week's over. Some stuff happened as well. Here's a short blurb: -Econ 100: Teacher comes in over an hour late to the second class. -Only Monday rehearsal to band for the quarter and less than half of the people in it show up. -Women's game on Thursday...we lose by a lot. Someone knocks down my stand (and paperwork) twice...I bear a slight grudge. -Mondays are going to be quite brutal. -First UCDC meeting of the quarter. I come in slightly late due to waking up late from a nap. -Wednesday: I have an IP meeting at 6:30 and a YD cabinet meeting at 7:30. Both in Courtyard study lounge. Convenient. So yeah...that's what's been up. I'll try to be better about updating 'cause I don't want too many of these long posts. Also, I've noticed that I've been skimping on the random quotes lately. It's due to a combination of not being able to find too many good ones and me just being lazy. So now, I present the return of the random quote... Random quote: "You may live longer if you switch to marajuana." -Professor Noviello Current Mood: busy | | Saturday, January 1st, 2005 | | 12:00 am |
